I checked with my insurance company...I can list any instrument or piece of equipment on my current homeowner's insurance policy as "scheduled". This means it is covered seperately, for all risks, not subject to my deductable and covered anywhere I might take it. All I have to supply my company with is a current invoice if it is new or an appraisel if used.

Cost is really cheap, for example, I covered my son's snare drum for $300.00 costing me $1.00 for the whole year.

This is the way to go and I would suspect this to be the case with most insurance companies.

Also, if you don't have homeowners insurance, get a renter's insurance policy to cover your personal property. You should be able to have music stuff "scheduled" on that as well.

Hope this helps...God Bless...Vince

You may also be able to obtain insurance from you current agent under a Personal Inland Marine policy or a Commercial Inland Marine policy depending upon the insurance carrier's underwriting appetite. As an insurance agent I generally do not prefer to schedule items to a homeowners policy since most folks have the premium escrowed by the mortgage company which means you pay a year in advance. Why pay a year in advance for this small expense?

I've heard that if you earn money with your gear, then homeowners insurance won't cover it since it is a part of your business. Anyone know about this?

I have talked to State Farm about this and they offer coverage that is very reasonable and extends to travel, and performance venues.
