Holy, Holy, Holy by Matt Maher

Today’s New Song Cafe is a classic favorite hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy as reimagined by Matt Maher and featured on the album, Jesus, Firm Foundation. In this song Matt explores the interesting paradox of God being holy and set a part from humanity while also being Immanuel, God with us.

When Matt sat down to work on this song, he and his wife and just had their son, Connor. He found himself surrounded by the mystery of the beginning stages of human life and how Jesus entered the world in the same way. God went through the same process of being in the womb and being formed.

At the same time, Matt had been approached by the International Justice Mission to write a song for them. He found himself thinking about the frailty of the human condition and how broken we are as a society. As he reflected on the Incarnation he decided he wanted to juxtapose the idea of God becoming flesh and dwelling among us with a hymn that is about the holiness and otherness of God, thoughts that evoke Isaiah 6.

The great thing about this reimagined hymn is that Matt was able to create a little space in the lyrics that allows the worshipper time to reflect and respond on the words they are singing. A nod to the psalms and the world Selah, which means to stop and think about what was just said.

This new rewrite of Holy, Holy, Holy is a great hymn to put back into rotation for your church if it isn’t already there. The song is full of truth and helps the believer wrap their mind and hearts around God’s holiness while at the same time reminding us that He came to this earth to live among us. We hope the new version makes it easier for you to use in your setlist!

From the cradle to the cross
God with us, God with us
For this broken world You love
God with us, God with us

You gave up Your only Son
God with us, God with us
So that all the world would know
Our God with us
